Beyond Closing Day: Why 5% of My Real Estate Commission Goes Back to Ontario Seniors

1. Introduction: The Heart of Home and Community

A home is more than a set of walls or a piece of equity; it is the bedrock of a life well-lived and the sanctuary where our community's history is written. As a local realtor, I have the privilege of helping families find their "forever homes," but I believe my responsibility to the neighborhood does not end when the keys are handed over. Real estate is not just about transactions—it is about the health and resilience of the people who make our streets feel like a community.

To truly advocate for our neighborhoods, we must look after the seniors who built them. It is a quiet emergency: many of our elders are being forced out of the homes they love simply because they lack the basic support to stay safe. This is why I have made a fundamental pledge:

Every closing gives back.

I donate 5% of my commission on every deal to support senior healthcare and home-assistance services that fall into the massive gaps left by the Ontario government.

While many assume our healthcare system provides a total safety net, the reality for aging families is far more complex and costly. Learn more about Hearth - Community Care Pledge

2. The Reality Check: Understanding Ontario's Home Care Gaps

A common misconception in Ontario is that the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) covers the full spectrum of aging at home. In truth, OHIP and programs like Ontario Health atHome are designed for "medical necessity"—prioritizing clinical nursing and short-term rehabilitation. They rarely fund the "quality of life" and "daily safety" supports—such as help with a bath, a ride to a specialist, or a hot meal—that allow a senior to maintain their independence.

The Coverage Gap: OHIP vs. Private Senior Care

Covered by OHIP / Government The Gaps (Out-of-Pocket Costs)
Hospital Stays & Physician Visits: Medically necessary doctor appointments and specialist consults. Extended Personal Support (PSW): Long-term daily assistance with bathing, grooming, and dressing.
Short-Term Nursing: Wound care or medication management specifically following a hospital discharge. Daily Living Support: Meal preparation, grocery shopping, routine housekeeping, and laundry.
Basic Rehabilitation: Short-term physiotherapy or occupational therapy to regain mobility after injury. Companionship & Safety: Routine visits to prevent isolation or overnight supervision for those with dementia.
Assistive Device Assessments: Evaluations for walkers/wheelchairs (ADP may cover 75% of the device cost). Medical Transportation: Escorted outings and reliable transportation to and from medical appointments.

The pressure on this system is reaching a fever pitch.

350,000

projected spike in Ontario seniors aged 75+ over the next five years

95%

of seniors express a fierce desire to age in their own homes

Ontario's population of seniors aged 75 and older is set to spike by 350,000 over the next five years. With 95% of seniors expressing a fierce desire to age in their own homes rather than in institutional care, these "gaps" are no longer just policy talking points—they represent a mounting human and financial crisis for local families.

3. The Human Impact: Financial Strain and the Caregiver Crisis

When the public system reaches its limit, the burden falls on family caregivers—the invisible backbone of our healthcare system. According to 2026 data from the Canadian Centre for Caregiving Excellence, these unpaid caregivers contribute an estimated $97 billion in care annually across Canada. Without them, our system would collapse, yet they are paying a staggering price for their devotion.

The Financial Toll

  • 49% of caregivers experience significant financial strain.
  • 1 in 5 caregivers spend more than $12,000 annually out of pocket to cover care gaps.
  • On average, Ontario caregivers pay $641 per month for medications, supplies, and professional help.

The Caregiver Burnout Crisis

  • 77% of caregivers report that their responsibilities have negatively impacted their mental and physical well-being.
  • The sense of desperation is accelerating: 72% of caregivers now report feeling so burnt out they don't know how they can continue—a significant jump from 67% just one year ago.

The Breaking Point

Nearly 1 in 5 Ontario caregivers (19%) have resorted to taking their senior to a hospital Emergency Room simply because they had no access to affordable respite care and reached a point where they could no longer cope.

The "So What?" for Real Estate

In my work, I frequently witness "crisis sales"—situations where a senior is forced to sell a home they cherish, not because they want to leave, but because their family has reached a financial or emotional breaking point. By redirecting a portion of my commission to bridge these care gaps, we are working to prevent those ER visits and keep our neighbors where they belong: in their homes.

4. Why This Matters to Me: A Natural Extension of 'Home'

My "Beyond Closing Day" philosophy is rooted in the belief that a realtor should be a community guardian. If my expertise is helping you find the right home, my mission must also include protecting your ability to keep that home as you age.

“Helping seniors age safely and with dignity is the logical conclusion of my work.”

Real estate is fundamentally about family and security. When we fund a few extra hours of a Personal Support Worker (PSW), provide meal assistance, or secure medical transportation, we are not just "giving back"—we are performing preventative care. We are investing in the fabric of our community to ensure that our neighborhoods remain vibrant, multi-generational, and compassionate.

This 5% pledge is my way of ensuring that the relationship between real estate and the community is a long-term investment in local welfare, rather than just a series of signatures on a page.
